republicans are making it clear they see that as a liberal agenda. speaker john boehner, other house republican leaders are about to hold a news conference. you're looking at live pictures from up there. our chief national correspondent john king is here. are the gloves off? >> you can certainly say yes or you might even say that the gloves are still on in the sense that republicans are looking to see what signals the president would send as he begins the second term. if you ask john boehner or mitch mcconnell, they believe the size of government, debt and deficit is is the biggest issues. and if you listen to the speech yesterday, he made only passing references to that. talk of immigration reform, many republicans including the speaker want to work with the president on that but if he talks a lot publicly, it puts pressure on the conservative base which any legal status is amnesty. the president also talking about gun control and gun rights, just talked to tom fuentes, it stretches the political coalition. the things that the president highlighted and spend more time on his inaugur

of stuff that people can come after you with. kind of the backdrop here is that house speaker john boehner has had some hiccups or headaches lately. it started late last year when house republicans struggled over how to deal with the george w. bush tax cuts. the house wanted them all extended for everybody. democrats are never on board. president obama was never going to be on board with the idea. so john boehner struggled in that situation, even coming up with an alternative plan for extending tax breaks for anyone making less than $1 million a year. he had to pull from the courthouse. so that was. a was. the next day, he also -- not the next day. excuse me, on january 1, they came back and finally agreed to raise tax rates for those incomes of people making $400,000 a year. that was a tough bill and proposal for him to put forward to, just because taxes went up at the end of the day. the next day he came back and decided to not have a vote on the sandy relief package. that made house lawmakers angry in the northeast. governor chris christie of new jersey also had some tough words for him

speaker john boehner after the inaugural address saying the president is trying to annihilate the republican party. that's a strong word. does this president see an opportunity? you can't find many democrats who think that president obama worries about the democratic party, 10, 15, 20 years down the road. you'll find a lot of democrats that say if you can turn the obama coalition into a democratic coalition, the democrats will have built in on the national stage what ronald reagan had for 20 years and republican party had after ronald reagan on the republican stage. if he can transfer it over, it spells trouble for the republicans. >> congresswoman, what do you think about what john king is saying? >> i'm not privy to the president's processes and how he came up with the decision. all i can tell you is women have been dying and fighting for this nation in combat roles in iraq and afghanistan. they may not have had those jobs specifically other than aviation, my branch of service, they've been fighting in combat and engaged in combat action. i think the last ten years of women
